Check your images' alt text
Alt text is how people using screen readers, and search engines, know what an image shows. Enter a page to see every image and whether its description works.
What it checks
- Images with no alt attribute at all (a WCAG failure)
- Alt text that is a file name, a generic word like "image", or starts with "image of"
- Alt text too long to listen to
- Decorative images correctly hidden with alt=""
Questions
What makes good alt text?
A short phrase saying what the image shows and why it's there: "Owner Sam fitting a bike in the shop", not "IMG_2041.jpg" or "bike photo". Logos: the company name.
Should every image have alt text?
Every image needs an alt attribute. Images that are only decoration get an empty one (alt=""), so screen readers skip them.
Why are some images missing from the list?
We read the HTML your server sends. Images added later by JavaScript, and CSS background images, aren't included.
