Check how your site redirects
People and links reach your site four ways: with or without www, http or https. All four should land on one secure address in one step. Enter your site to see the path each one takes.
What it checks
- All four address variants, followed hop by hop with each status code
- Addresses that end on plain HTTP or don't load at all
- Redirect chains (more than one hop) and loops
- Temporary redirects (302, 307) where a permanent one belongs
- Variants that end on different addresses, which splits your search ranking
Questions
Does it matter if www and non-www both work?
Yes, if they show the same page without redirecting: search engines may treat them as two sites with the same content. Pick one and redirect the other to it.
Is one extra redirect a problem?
It's small, but it adds a round trip to every first visit and every crawl. One hop from any variant to the final address is the goal.
